Shaolin Gwan Jong Staff Training Dummy!

Shen Martial Arts, are happy and excited to announce that we are now taking orders for the authentic Shaolin Gwang Jong - Staff Dummy.  This has been years in the making and it is a tremendous pleasure to be able to offer the authentic Gwan Jong to our customers and to serious martial artists everywhere.

We added  the Gwan Jong - Staff Training Dummy to our solid wood Ching Jong - balance dummy in our growing line up of rare, high quality wooden dummies. Like the balance dummy, the staff training dummy comes from the Choy Lee Fut style of kung fu.  The Choy Lee Fut system is unique in that  it preserved the designed and training methods for 18 different wooden dummies from the Shaolin Temple.

The Gwan Jong is so named for its common or primary use  in training the long staff. The combination and configuration of targets and propellers is designed to develop superior accuracy and power when doing the wide variety o f techniques necessary for mastering the staff.

It forces the development of advanced skills, like extraordinary coordination and sensitivity through the staff but it is also a tool for solidifying basic, fundamental skills such as correct grip, use of body, stances , footwork  and maneuverability around a subject while wielding a long weapon. Both Long distance and short distance techniques are drilled with the closing in and moving back transitions that are so important and can often neglected  due to the obvious long distance capabilities of the staff.

These skills apply to other long weapons, the staff thus being widely considered the essential weapon to learn and given the title of  "Grandfather of all Weapons".   In fact, not only do the drills, exercises and forms for the staff improve your usage of other long weapons, but you can actually practice and drill weapons such as the spear, tiger fork, pudao, kwan dao, etc. on the Gwan Jong.

In fact, with the superior solid one piece wood body, custom metal flags and metal attachments and holders, the Shen Gwan Jong can be used to train almost any weapon you can think of, from long to short, from wood to metal bladed, single or double, and even flexible weapons. Not a kung fu practitioner? Escrimas, knives, Sai and Tonfa and Nunchaku.  A versatile piece of equipment indeed.

Shen Gwan Jong

Our Shaolin staff dummies are individually hand made. The body is made from selected single solid pieces of wood. All brackets, holders and flags are made of steel and custom welded. All parts are meticulously measured, checked for integrity, and hand-fitted for proper function and smooth motion. The wood is sealed and coated multiple times. The steel parts are also sealed for long lasting protection against moisture and debris.

Every part of the Shen Gwan Jong is designed to sustain the forces generated when using a long staff, which are exponentially greater than what an empty hand dummy is exposed to.

Care must be taken to not damage your weapons when using them on the Gwan Jong. White Waxwood Staffs hold up well, but hardwoods will dent and can break when contacting the body or any of the metal parts on the Gwan Jong.  The dummy will sustain scratching and  dings but is guaranteed to continue functioning and against breakage during normal, proper use.

The Wooden Dummy Training Method - Our Shaolin Heritage

The method of wooden dummy training that we see today comes from the Shaolin system of kung fu. Many of the styles that are derived from and that trace their roots to the Shaolin Temple have some form of dummy training in their kung fu.

In the past, it was very rare to see any type of wooden dummy training as it is advanced training and was considered proprietary to each particular style of  kung fu.  The first dummy to gain wide attention and only in the last 40 years, is the Mook Yan Jong or wooden man dummy  used in Wing Chun. It thus came to be referred to as the "Wing Chung Dummy".  The Mook Yan Jong is in fact a dummy inherited from Shaolin and kept within Wing Chun lineages.

As time has passed and more information is available, we find that other styles also inherited and kept wooden dummy training in their teachings, including the Northern Praying Mantis, Hung Gar, Choy Lee Fut, and even the so-called internal styles such as Ba Gua.  There are some Hung Gar and Jow Gar lineages that have more than one wooden dummy and even  combined dummies. However, of all of the Shaolin derived styles of kung fu, Choy Lee Fut has maintained the widest array of wooden dummies.

It is important to note that these dummies originated in the Shaolin Temple and that they do not belong or are exclusive to any one style. It is the legacy of Shaolin and they are part of our Shaolin inheritance. Further, they are highly effective training tools and can be sued by any style of martial art for improving a surprising variety of skills.  So wether you practice kung fu or tae kwon do, MMA or Jeet Kuen Do, you owe it to yourself to take a look at these fantastic pieces of equipment.
