Choy Lee Fut Ching Jong
A Variety of Wooden Dummies Most people associate the wooden dummy with the Wing Chun Mook Yan jong. In fact there are many types of wooden dummies used in the different kung fu styles. One of the most famous is the Ching Jong from Choy Lee Fut (also spelled Choy Lay Fut, Choy Li Fut, Cai Li Fo, Choi Lai Fat)system of kung fu.
Ching Jong aka Balance Dummy The Ching Jong or "Balance Dummy" is the first and arguably most important of the 18 wooden dummies taught in the Choy Lee Kung Fu Style and inherited from the legendary wooden man training that originated at the Shaolin (Siu Lum) Temple.
Ching Jong Training The Ching Jong is designed to develop a various combat skills. It will strengthen and condition the various striking and contact areas of the body including the forearms (Kiu or Bridge Hands), the shins, and the various striking areas (elbows, knees, insteps, feet, palms, fists).
Wooden Dummy Advanced Skills At the more advanced level, Ching Jong training develops distance, timing and rythm, and trains continuity of technique, both offensive and defensive while executing stances, transitions, and footwork.
Seven Sand Bags Unique to the Choy Lee Fut Ching Jong are the seven individual sand bags place at various locations of the wooden dummy body and simulating important striking areas of the human body including the face, temples, abdomen/solar plexus, ribs and groin. Ching Jong drills and forms challenge the practitioner to strike these bags and to generate power while contending with the balanced arm and maintaining continuity of motion and maneuvering around the dummy.
Balanced Arm Dummy Although it derives its name from the movable balanced arm, it is in the active, dynamic training that the name Balance Dummy best fits as Ching Jong training will develop balance in action and the ability to stay rooted and in balance while executing strikes from shifting positions, stances and angles.
