Shaolin Hall of Wooden Dummies
According to legend, the Shaolin Temple monks trained in a Hall of Wooden Dummies filled with 108 dummies of different designs and configurations. Although the existance of this hall has never been confirmed, its mark is evident in the legacy still found the various types of wooden dummies used in different systems of kung fu.
Mook Jongs, Ching Jongs and Makiwara!
The most famous and most widely available wooden dummy is the Mook Jong or Muk Yan Jong (Mu Ren Zhuang in Mandarin) used in the Wing Chun style of kung fu. However, the Choy Lee Fut kung fu style alone has 18 different types of dummies! In addition, there are wooden dummies of varying designs and used for training different skills in kung fu styles such as Hung Gar, Praying Mantis, Chow Gar, Fut Gar, Lung Ying, Bak Mai, Ba Gua Zhang and can even be found in okinawan karate in the form of Makiwara posts.
Rare and Hard to Find Wooden Dummies
Aside from the popular Wing Chun Dummy, most others are rarely seen and even more difficult to obtain. Shen Martial Arts now offers the amazing Choy Lee Fut Ching Jong or Balance Dummy and are researching and prototyping others from the Choy Lee Fut system such as the Gwan Jong (Staff Dummy), Sam Sing Jong (3 Star Dummy), Dahn Wong Jong (Spring Dummy), Sui Sau Jong (Hand Breaking Dummy)and Moi Fah Jong (Plum Flower Posts).
